Pre-Modern Asian Ideas On Race

Standards of beauty in South and Southeast Asia: Marco Polo reports on
the Dravidians of South India: “It is a fact that in this country when a child
is born they anoint him once a week with oil of sesame, and this makes him
grow much darker than when he was born.

For I assure you that the darkest man is here the most highly esteemed and
considered better than those who are not so dark. Let me add that in very
truth, these people portray and depict their gods and idols black, and their
devils white as snow. For they say that God and all the saints are black and
the devils are all white...”

The kingdoms of southeast Asia emerged as early as 200 B.C. in a region highly saturated with Blacks, and reinforced by migrants from southern China and India. These kingdoms, Khampa, Fu-nan, Kampuchea, Zabaj, and a host of other powers, alternately bidded for supremacy. Testimony from early Chinese travelers described them as black in skin color, and frizzy-haired.

Awestruck by the pride of these people, one visitor wrote, “… they consider black the most beautiful. In all the southern regions, it is the same.”

Prior to European colonization, the ancient Visayans of the Philippines considered the very opposite of high noses and oval faces handsome. Visayans, as well as some other Austronesian peoples in Malaysia and Indonesia, compressed their babies' skulls to achieve broad faces with receding foreheads and flat noses. The Minahasa of Celebes even restricted binding with a forehead board to the nobility.

Old Chinese Views on Caucasians:

By traditional Chinese opera conventions, a black face is considered nobler. Actors wear masks that denoted the character's qualities. A predominantly black face indicates courage, righteousness and incorruptibility. A predominantly white face indicates craftiness, deceit and knavery.

Ming Dynasty China records even state that Caucasians, especially blondes, are physically unattractive: Huihui are shaggy with big noses, and Qipchags have light hair and blue eyes. Their appearance is vile and peculiar, so there are those (Chinese) who do not wish to marry them.

The Character and Beauty of Ethiopians Admired by Ancient Europeans

"The Ethiopians," wrote Herodotos, "are said to be the tallest and best-looking people in the world." (In ancient Roman/Greek writings, the term "Ethiopian" is loosely used to refer to all black Africans.) Greek writer Diodoros wrote of the Ethiopians: "Their piety has been published abroad among all men, and it is generally held that the sacrifices practiced among the Ethiopians are those which are the most pleasing to heaven."

MYTH #6: Africans Worshipped The First Europeans As "Gods"

Contrary to the racist delusions of past and present Hollywood moviemakers, Africans did not think the first Europeans were gods (or goddesses). Some Africans believed Europeans were white because they had been skinned alive.

Others, like Olaudah Equiano, was terrified by the appearance of the white men who kidnapped him from his African village and brought him to the New World on a slaveship in 1756. After ten years of enslavement, Olaudah purchased his freedom and wrote his autobiography, describing the horrors of slavery, the cruelty of slaveowners, and how he fainted with fright the first time he saw the “white men with horrible looks, red faces, and long hair.”

Yes, according to former US Congressmen John Rarick, or attorney Gene Healy, who have formerly challenged the 14th Amendment, on the grounds that it was never constitutionally ratified because less than 3/4 of the existing states of the union at that time passed the amendment.

In attorney Raoul Berger's rigid interpretation, the post-Civil War Congress was dominated by "Negrophobia"; it was willing to extend to blacks rudimentary civil rights, such as equal punishment for crimes and the right to own property, but did not intend the 14th Amendment to grant them equal access to voting booths, schools, juries or jobs. Thus in Berger's accounting, when Congress enacted the provision including blacks as full citizens in apportioning House seats, it did not mean to compel the former Confederacy actually to give blacks the vote. Quite the opposite, he says: the provision meant to reduce Southern representation when the former slavocracy denied blacks the opportunity to vote, ensuring continued Re publican control of the Government.

October 3, 2005 (WLS) -- The city of Chicago will pay Jeremiah Mearday, the alleged victim of police brutality in 1997, $1.75 million. In exchange for the money, Mearday agrees to dismiss his lawsuits against the city and police department.

During the fall of 1997, the Jeremiah Mearday police brutality case dominated headlines in Chicago. Eight years later Mearday is a suburban father of two who is ready to put the case behind him.
"This took my life, my pride and dignity," said Mearday. "Hopefully, I can put this behind me and move on, raise my family, and just go on with my life."

Mearday hoped Monday would be his last day at a criminal or civil courthouse in the police brutality case that changed his life.
